Privacy Policy
North Coaster operates the website northcoaster.com.au and associated social media. This policy explains what personal information we collect, how we use it, and your choices. We handle personal information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).

What we collect
Information you give us. If you subscribe to our newsletter (the North Coast Insider), contact us, submit a story tip, enter a competition (such as a photo competition), or enquire about advertising, we collect what you provide, typically your name, email address, and the content of your message. Advertising enquiries may also include a business name and phone number. Competition entries may include photos you submit and any details required by the competition terms.
Information collected automatically. Like most websites, we collect standard technical data when you visit: IP address, browser type, device type, pages visited, and referring site. We use analystics to understand how the Site is used. This data is aggregated and does not identify you personally to us.
Cookies. The Site uses cookies for basic functionality and analytics. You can disable cookies in your browser settings; parts of the Site may not work as intended if you do.
If you leave a comment, we collect the name and email you provide along with your comment and IP address (used for spam detection).
What we don’t collect
We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 16. We do not collect sensitive information (health, financial, government identifiers) and ask that you don’t include it in messages to us.
How we use your information
We use personal information to:
- Send you the newsletter you subscribed to (you can unsubscribe at any time via the link in every email)
- Respond to your messages, tips and enquiries
- Run competitions you enter, including publishing entries where the competition terms say so
- Arrange and manage advertising with businesses that enquire
- Understand how the Site is used so we can improve it
- Meet legal obligations if required
We do not sell personal information. We do not use your information for purposes unrelated to the above without asking you first.
Who we share it with
We share personal information only with the service providers that make the Site run:
- Website hosting
- Email newsletter platform
- Analytics
Some of these providers store data outside Australia (commonly in the United States or Europe). By using the Site or subscribing, you acknowledge your information may be processed in those locations under the provider’s own safeguards.
We may disclose information if required by law. If North Coaster is ever sold or merged, subscriber lists may transfer to the new owner under this same policy.
Embedded content and outbound links
Articles on this Site may include embedded content from other platforms (for example, social media posts from local venues, or maps). Embedded content behaves as if you visited that platform directly — those platforms may collect data about you and use their own cookies, under their own privacy policies. The same applies to external sites we link to. We don’t control and aren’t responsible for their practices.
Advertising
The Site carries advertising from local businesses.
How long we keep it
We keep personal information only as long as needed for the purpose it was collected: newsletter details until you unsubscribe, enquiries for up to 24 months, competition entries for the period stated in the competition terms. Analytics data is retained per our provider’s settings.
Security
We take reasonable steps to protect personal information. No online service can guarantee absolute security, but we limit what we collect in the first place, which is the best protection of all.
Your choices and rights
You can:
- Unsubscribe from the newsletter at any time via the link in any email
- Request access to the personal information we hold about you
- Ask us to correct or delete your information
To do any of these, contact us at info@northcoaster.com.au. We’ll respond within a reasonable time (usually 30 days).
If you believe we’ve mishandled your information and we can’t resolve it with you directly, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at oaic.gov.au.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The current version will always be on this page, with the date above. Material changes affecting newsletter subscribers will be flagged in the newsletter.
