The arrival of Costco at Alkimos is set to deliver more than another major shopping destination for Perth’s northern coastal corridor, with the proposed warehouse expected to create approximately 250 local jobs once operational.
Costco will anchor the planned Home X Trade Hub at Alkimos Central, a new large-format retail and commercial precinct on Romeo Road. The warehouse is expected to open in 2027, although an exact opening date has not yet been announced and the timing remains subject to planning, construction and development milestones.
For communities across Alkimos, Eglinton, Yanchep, Butler and surrounding suburbs, the project represents another significant step in the transformation of the northern corridor into a more complete employment and services centre.
A major new employment hub for the north coast
The proposed Costco warehouse will cover approximately 14,234 square metres and is expected to be slightly larger than the company’s existing Perth Airport location. Plans also include about 870 dedicated parking bays and a separate members-only fuel station.
Around 250 people are expected to work at the Costco operation once it opens. More employment may also be created as additional bulky-goods retailers, trade suppliers and commercial businesses move into the wider 24-hectare Home X Trade Hub.
This is particularly welcome news for northern suburbs residents who currently travel considerable distances for work, shopping and specialist services. A major employer in Alkimos could provide more opportunities for local people to work closer to home while supporting the continuing growth of Alkimos Central.
DevelopmentWA describes Alkimos Central as a future city centre focused on employment, transport, health, education and community services for the growing Alkimos-Eglinton region. Stage One of its retail precinct is currently expected to open in 2027, although DevelopmentWA notes that project timeframes may change.
What kinds of Costco jobs could become available?
Costco has not started advertising positions specifically for its proposed Alkimos warehouse, and local recruitment is likely to begin closer to the opening date.
However, Costco’s current Australian careers portal provides an indication of the kinds of roles typically available across its warehouses. Current listings include merchandise stockers, forklift drivers, maintenance assistants, food-court assistants, trolley collectors, cashier assistants, receiving staff and other warehouse-based positions.
Costco warehouses also commonly employ people in fresh-food departments, membership services, optical and hearing services, tyre fitting, administration, security and customer service. Roles may be offered across full-time, part-time, casual, seasonal and temporary arrangements.
These are examples of typical Costco jobs rather than confirmed Alkimos vacancies. Residents interested in working at the new warehouse should be cautious of unofficial recruitment advertisements and watch Costco Australia’s official careers portal as the project moves closer to completion.
More services closer to home
The proposed warehouse would sell Costco’s familiar range of bulk groceries, household products, electronics, furniture, clothing and general merchandise.
Planning details also outline a bakery, sushi bar, rotisserie area, optometry service, hearing-aid clinic and tyre repair and fitting centre. A standalone Costco fuel station is proposed for the north-eastern section of the site.
The location on Romeo Road will place the development close to the Mitchell Freeway and approximately one kilometre south-east of Alkimos Station, improving access for residents throughout the northern corridor.
For the North Coaster community, Costco’s arrival is another sign that investment is beginning to catch up with the region’s rapid population growth. Alongside new transport connections, recreation facilities and commercial development, the Home X Trade Hub has the potential to bring valuable jobs, services and shopping choices closer to home.
