Alkimos pool locked in for November, operator appointed

Construction underway on the Alkimos Aquatic and Recreation Centre

The $88 million Alkimos Aquatic and Recreation Centre now has an operator and a date: BlueFit will run it, and it’s expected to open in November 2026.

Construction is due to finish in October, with the centre opening to the public the following month. It sits in Alkimos Central, north of Romeo Road and directly across from the train station, which is the whole point. You’ll be able to get there without a car.

What’s in it

  • 50m lap pool
  • Indoor and outdoor pools, plus water play
  • Learn-to-swim spaces
  • Gym and fitness studios
  • Multi-purpose sports courts (netball, basketball, soccer, volleyball, badminton)
  • Crèche and café

The pools will be heated, with the City investigating geothermal as the heat source.

Who’s running it

BlueFit operates more than 50 centres nationally. Their WA presence is growing, they’ve got Belmont Oasis, and were recently appointed to run the Pavilion at the WACA as part of that ground’s redevelopment.

The City of Wanneroo keeps oversight through contract management and performance monitoring rather than running the place day to day.

Where the money came from

  • $30 million — Federal Government
  • $12.6 million — State Government
  • $14.2 million — Alkimos-Eglinton Developer Contribution Plan

Worth noting the project was costed at $65 million in earlier planning. It’s $88 million now.

Why it matters

This is the first proper aquatic centre in the northern growth corridor, and the City’s own business case treats it as stage one — a second facility at Yanchep is flagged for the longer term, as Yanchep grows.

For Alkimos it’s the piece that turns the town centre from a plan into a place. A pool across from a train station, with commercial land laid out around it, is the kind of anchor that pulls everything else in.
